Signs you might have a dead (or dying) battery:

  • 1. The Engine “Cranks” But won’t actually start: This is usually a good sign that there’s something wrong with your battery or your starter.
  • 2. Nothing Seems to Work: If you turn the key and simply nothing happens, there’s a good chance that your car’s battery is dead. This one is usually easy to diagnose
  • 3. “Cold Cranking” isn’t quite Working: “Cold Cranking” refers to your battery’s ability to start up for the first time. If you frequently notice that it takes your battery a couple tries to start the car, it could be an early warning sign that your battery is ready to fail.
  • 4. You’ve Jumped Your Car (a lot): If you frequently have to “jump” your battery, it’s probably time for a new one. Using jumper cables or a jump box can be hard on a battery, which can also put stress on your alternator and your starter. This can turn an inexpensive fix (a new battery) into a more expensive one (a new alternator or starter, or both.)

How to Extend the Life of Your Car or Truck batter

  • Keep the terminals clean and free of corrosion and rust
  • Make sure the battery is secure, and doesn’t vibrate while driving
  • Help keep your battery insulated from extreme temperatures, most new cars already do this. For some older cars, battery insulation kits are available.
  • Keep an eye on wear and tear
  • Don’t forget to turn off your headlights, cabin lights, and other electronic accessories while the car isn’t in use
